my turn to get an apology
I'm slightly ashamed to say that I have been working at American Eagle (off and on) for almost 2 years now. In NY, I thought I hated it and wanted to quit, but really, that was bliss compared to now. I truly believe they mean to ruin me altogether. Today was to be my first day at the store that is 5 minutes from my shed. I was so excited to not have to drive 25 minutes on I40 to work, wasting gas and valuable sleeping time. I was scheduled at 9, so I left at 8:45, got there at 8:50 and waited. There was another associate there waiting with me. The manager arrived, saw me and said, "You're gonna be so bitter, please don't hate me, it wasn't my decision, it was Melissa's." Then she looked at me pleadingly, and I knew. "You're sending me home, aren't you?" I queried. "Yes," she replied.
What they claimed happened was that they saw that I hadn't picked up my schedule, so they tried to call me, and they thought I didn't know I was supposed to work, so they covered my shift with somebody else (the guy waiting with me). There are so many things wrong with this, that I don't know where to start.
1. The schedule they claim I never picked up was nowhere to be found in the store. Why? Because it's stuck to my cabinet at home so I know when I have to work! I picked it up a week ago. All of this confusion supposedly happened yesterday.
2. They "tried to call me." Um, my phone never rang. Here's what happened: They called my old store to get my phone number. Old store gave them my NEW YORK phone number, which is so ridiculous because I've given them my new number at least twice. New store "tries to call me" only to have a conversation with the Spanish-speaker who now has that number. New store doesn't think that maybe Old store had the wrong number, but maybe they have the right number laying around somewhere. They don't bother to try to find me at all after that, opting instead to just assume that, despit the fact that I'm 25 years old with a Master's degree, I'm still just that irresponsible (even though THEY DON'T HAVE MY SCHEDULE BECAUSE I ALREADY PICKED IT UP).
3. They get someone else to cover my shift, and then when I show up when I'm supposed to, they send me home instead of him. What? This is my shift. It is not his shift. Send him home.
4. On top of it all, they have me scheduled for 2 overnights in a row next weekend. They did not consult me on this, which is how it works when there's a conflict with your availability and they want you to work anyway. I'm unavailable on Saturdays and Sundays because, well, I work every other day (and night). A girl needs rest...and a social life. They asked if I could do Saturday, and even though I'm technically not available on Saturday, I thought it would help me out as the new girl to consent to helping them. Next thing I know, they've got me scheduled from 9:00 p.m. on Saturday to 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, and then I have to go back from 6:00 p.m. Sunday to midnight. So much for rest and a social life.
If everyone could just pray that I get a full time teaching job soon, that would be great. Thanks.
