Wilmington: The Update
Alright, so obviously my supervisor doesn't read my blog, because if she did, she would have known better than to call me yesterday morning smack dab in the middle of Magnum, P.I. Did I or did I not very clearly state before I left that I did not care to receive any stress-causing phone calls whilst I was relaxing in Wilmington? Oh I think I did. But we'll get there.
I slept in Monday morning in an attempt to restore some normalcy after Nashville. I lounged around for a bit, did some trip prepping, showered, packed, chatted on gmail, and then I hit the road around 2:00. It was actually perfect timing because Andy was home between jobs. If I'd gotten there much later or much earlier, I'd have had to find something to do to kill time (not that that would have been a problem whatsoever, but still, it was nice). So I went over to the boys' house, and then I went with Andy to his 2nd job at the community arts center, where we hung out for a while and ate a lovely dinner from Subway. Then I left him there and went to meet JBlair at "Bible study," which was really more of a book discussion than a Bible study, but it was still interesting. The book they're reading is Can Man Live Without God by Ravi Zacharias, and as far as I can tell, it's a super-intellectual book that basically answers, "No." But I haven't read it, so I can't really say.
I woke up at a reasonable hour on Tuesday and finished watching the movie we'd started the night before: Ali G in Da House, "da house" here being Parliament. This is one of the most ridiculous movies I've ever seen, but since I'm into ridiculous (and Ali G), I found it highly amusing. It's definitely not for everyone, though, so if you don't like it, don't blame me. If you like British humor and Will Ferrell, though, give it a shot.
Then I went for about a 4-5 mile walk. I don't know how far I went exactly, but I walked for about an hour and a half, so that's a good estimate. Took my time getting showered and dressed, and then Blair picked me up and we went to Schlotsky's. Then the poor schmuck went back to work while I spent the afternoon in a lounge chair in the back yard reading and writing some highly entertaining fiction.
I'd called my grandmother on the way into town, but I found out that she was in Virginia, so I called my aunt, who invited me to watch my cousin's lacrosse game that afternoon and then back to their house for spinach lasagna. I took her up on both of those. Good decisions, both. That night, I watched American Idol with the boys and went to bed. In a bunk bed. That felt much like a sarcophagus.
When I woke up yesterday morning, I was delighted to find that Magnum was on. And THAT's when my supervisor called me, all in a tizzy, about a "problem" with the last turn-in. Apparently there were 22 students registered but only 20 on the enrollment report. I don't know what somebody was looking at that had them all confused, but they just hadn't thought it through completely. I won't go into what had happened because it would be terribly boring even for me to type, and I'd be the only one who understood it anyway. Suffice it to say that there wasn't a problem at all. Everything was fine. She'd just called to stress me out and interrupt Magnum completely unnecessarily.
I'd like to thank those of you, by the way, who heeded my words and didn't call to stress me out whilst I was vacationing. It was glorious.
Before I left, I "observed" Mr. Motley's pre-calculus class. Ha! Totally lost. As far as I'm concerned, those high schoolers are geniuses. I had a sneaking suspicion all along, though, that if they'd replaced all the numbers with parts of speech, it would have made total sense. But again...that's why I teach English and he teaches math.
