Sevilla, and some other things
First things first. I saw a fat man pop a wheelie on a Vespa yesterday. It may not have really been a Vespa, but it was a motor scooter nonetheless. Not sure why he felt the need to do that, but Natasha and I were highly entertained by it.
Sevilla=HOT. Remember my calculations from the trip to Granada? Converting C-F is loads of fun...until you realize how ridiculously hot it is. The weather had predicted that it would be C 45 degrees in Sevilla. Had that been the case, it would've been really hot. HOWEVER, it was somewhere between 47-52!!! Ok, that's seriously like F 120!!!! Who lives in places that hot?? I could totally call it a winter home, but once it hits about 35, I'm out. I really liked what I saw of Sevilla, though. We went to the Alcazar, which is this gigantic, beautiful, amazing castle. (Note to future husband: We're getting married there....in December.) Sofie and I were walking around saying, "Yeah, I'd live here." Now we just have to somehow both become Queen of Spain. That's where the king and queen live when they're in Sevilla. I think it's actually their official home. Crazy.
-Where do you live?
-You know that big honkin' castle down in Sevilla? Yeah, that's my house.
Whoa. It had all this cool tiling. I couldn't stop taking pictures of it. And the gardens--extensive. Now I understand why princesses in stories are always out walking through the gardens, or why they always go walking in the garden when their beau comes-a-callin'. It has very romantic potential. I'd accept a proposal there...on a clear cool night under the stars in the gazebo (that is in addition, of course, to my other options of the Cloisters in NYC and the feet of Jesus in Tegucigalpa). Sofie and I talked about how cool it would be to get married in the cathedral there, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't let me 'cause I'm a protestant. Anywho, the cathedral was pretty amazing too, although I felt bad for the Muslims because the Catholics tore down their mosque to build it. They wanted to make something so monstrous that future generations would look at it and think they were madmen. They succeeded. It's the 3rd biggest cathedral in the world (behind St. Peter's in Rome and St. Paul's in London), and it's the biggest gothic creation in the world...AND Christopher Columbus is buried there (in 1492....). Just puts St. Patrick's to shame. We also climbed up this wicked tall tower where we could see the whole city. 32 ugghh-ly floors, but the view was great. The first thing we noticed were the swimming pools on the tops of at least 2 hotels. Oh how glorious that would've been!! But no--we were just swimming in our own sweat. Nice. And I don't think I even made a dent in my horrendous tank top tan. Even if the white parts got sun, so did the tan parts. I think I'm stuck with it. Darn those Gap layering tanks!!! A backpacker's dream is a sunbather's nightmare. Sure they roll up conveniently small, but the consequences of wearing shirts that all have the same cut....I digress.
We did the last part of our Sevilla tour on the bus. We saw where the '92 world's fair was, the American consulate, and the Plaza Española, where I'm told part of "Star Wars" was filmed. I don't know which part. I think it was maybe in Episode II?? I'll have to watch it again to see for myself.
We returned. The bus seat was cramped and the sun was hot on my arm in spite of the A/C on my face. I survived. Came back all sweaty. Called my mama. Checked my messages.
That'll be a later blog. Time for class.
